Iran Drawn with Qatar in Indoor Hockey Asia Cup

The Indoor Hockey Asia Cup 2017 (Men and Women) will commence this coming Monday! Catch the first day of matches on 24 to 28 April. The tournament is expected to fire up the hockey world as the most decorated team in Indoor Hockey Asia Cup history, Iran, defend their title against leading Asian teams. Iran has been drawn in Group A along with Qatar, Malaysia and Oman, having won all six Indoor Hockey Asia Cup titles to date, and will be top contender this year. Whereas, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei and Thailand are in group B. The top two teams from each group will play in the cross-over semi-finals.

Other top contender include Malaysia, with a history of 4 silvers and 1 bronze, Uzbekistan, with 1 silver and 4 bronzes, and Kazakhstan who has secured 1 silver and 1 bronze medal at the games.

The women’s category – comprising defending champions Kazakh­stan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uzbekis­tan, China and North Korea – will be a round-robin affair with the top two teams meeting in the final. Title defenders Kazakhstan are going strong and hold the title for the past four tournaments.

All matches will be played at the Aspire Dome Indoor Hockey Ground Doha – Qatar. Aspire Dome has a seating capacity of 1000 spectators. Previous major international tournaments held at Aspire Zone includes Arab Nations Cup 2015. It will mark the first time the State of Qatar hosts a hockey tournament of this scale, and will be expecting the participation of eight men’s teams and six women’s teams.
