JAKARTA: Thailand came back from a goal down to beat Indonesia 2-1 and clinch 9th place in the Men’s Hockey Event at the Asian Games 2018.
The match played at 12:30 pm local time was a chance for both teams to end their tournament on a high. It was even a more special occasion for the Indonesian side as they wanted to put up a solid show in front of the home crowd, that had supported them throughout the tournament.
Looking at historical statistics, the last time Thailand took part in the Asian Games was in 1998 at home, where they finished 10th. They have finished 8thplace in 1966, 1970 and 1978.
Their win against Indonesia was also the second in the tournament. Earlier, they had defeated Kazakhstan 3-2 in the group phase.
Indonesia took the lead in the 18th minute through a field goal by Aly Surya Alfandy. This was soon neutralized by Thailand in the 22ndminute with Thanop Kampanthong’s goal.
In the 27th minute, Thailand scored a second that proved to be the winner from a field goal through Thanakrit Boon Art.
The Indonesian side came close to equalizing with a couple of chances, however, at the end of the 4thQuarter, Thailand managed to maintain their 1 goal lead to win the match and end their Asian Games on a high.
