India went on a scoring spree, putting eight goals past New Zealand at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium.

The 8-2 win was achieved with clinical finishing and a high level of skills by the Indians.

But Indian coach BJ Kariapa earned the wrath of the media as he kept them waiting for more then 20 minutes and the media left.

India had defeated Malaysia 4-2 while New Zealand went down 2-0 to Great Britain in their respective opening day matches on Saturday.

The two teams met in a friendly before the tournament with New Zealand winning 4-3.

But India put that defeat at the back of their minds and took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.

Dilpreet Singh started the ball rolling with a goal in the 6th minute.

It was 2-0 in the 14th, this time Shikanand Lakra being on target.

There was no respite for the Kiwis as India scored three times in the second quarter to make it 5-0 at halftime.

Sanjay ( 17th minute and 22nd minutes) and Mandeep Mor (20th minute) were the scorers.

New Zealand found difficulty not only containing the opponents but hardly could launch a decent Attack.

But a penalty corner strike by Dylan Thomas in the 28th minute reduced the deficitĀ  to 5-1.

The halftime hooter was a welcome relief for the Kiwi players.

It was a more spirited opening ten minutes of the third quarter by New Zealand who forced three penalty corners but failed to make them count.

However the constant pressure eventually paid dividends as Dylan got his and the teams second in the 44th minute.

Their joy was however short lived as India moved to a 6-2 lead in the 45 minute, this time Suman Beck scoring.

India could have extended their lead in the very next minute as they were awarded a penalty stroke.

But Sanjay muffed his attempt.

Pratap Lakra ( 50th minute) and Surdip Charmako ( 51st) added the other goals for the convincing 8-2 win.
