India’s 70th Republic Day celebrations were recently held in front of a large crowd in the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, in Muscat, Oman. The event took place on the 20th of January, 2019.
In order to celebrate the occasion, two separate hockey cups were organized; the Ambassador Cup, in which school teams competed, and the Republic Day of India Cup in which the Oman Veterans team and the Team Coorg competed.
The Republic Day of India Cup saw the Veteran team face off against Team Coorg, and it was won by the team Coorg 3 – 1. As for the Ambassador Cup (boys) Indian school Wadi Kabir lifted the glittering trophy in a tie breaker against Maabella Team B. The Ambassador Cup (girls) the Indian school Maabella took home the prize.
The Chief Guest of the tournament was H.E Indian Ambassador Munu Mahawar who was joined by the Guests of Honor Kiran Asher, Group Managing Director of Al Ansari Group, and Captain Talib Al Wahaibi, Chairman of the Oman Hockey Association.
H.E The Ambassador of India Shri Munu Mahawar distributed the trophies, medals and certificates to the participating teams. Captain Talib Al Wahaibi was honored by H.E The Ambassador of India with a beautiful memento. Mr. Kiran Asher was also honored by the Ambassador as he was also presented a memento. In a noble gesture Mr Mustaf Gulam Al Lawati presented the souvenir hockey sticks to H.E the Ambassador, SAS Naqvi the organizer, and Mr. Bellu Kuttappa.
All in all the event was a huge success and the Asian Hockey Federation would like to thank the organizing committee for hosting such a wonderful and successful even in Oman.
