Indonesia begins 2030 YOG bid   The Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) has reportedly opened dialogue with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and initiated the process of bidding to host the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2030 according to its Chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari.

The Southeast Asian country has made no secret of its desire to host the next available Summer Olympic Games in 2036 and sees its younger version six years prior as the perfect stepping stone. It has serious competition from India for both, however, which is so far the only nation to officially submit a bid to the IOC’s Future Host Commission for the 2036 hosting rights and has a similar plan for the 2030 Youth Olympics.

“The National Olympic Committee (NOC) has done the first bidding process for the Youth Olympics in Jakarta in 2030,” said Oktohari. “The ever-developing infrastructure in Indonesia will definitely increase our chances of becoming the host of major multi-sports events like the Youth Olympics.”

According to Oktohari, the bidding was held on Tuesday afternoon just before the Indonesian NOC celebrated its 73rd anniversary.  “We conveyed earlier directly to the IOC, hopefully, it will be continued with the next meetings. Hopefully, Indonesia can be trusted to host the Youth Olympic Games,” he said on Tuesday.

The KOI Chairman also pointed to the adequate infrastructure in Indonesia required for major events, particularly venues in Jakarta and Palembang that were used for the 2018 Asian Games and Asian Para Games. “Even after that there are new venues such as the Jakarta International Stadium and the Indonesia Arena which are also the pride of Indonesia,” said Okto.

“We are quite sure that it is supported by the people of Indonesia, supported by the government, especially,” he continued, referring to the bid. “God willing, Indonesia can gain trust.”

The Youth Olympic Games is a quadrennial international multi-event organised by the IOC for athletes aged 15 to 18 years. The next summer edition will take place in Dakar, Senegal next year meaning that the 2030 edition to be awarded to a host country.
