Hosts Qatar showed resilience and punched their way into the men’s Indoor Asia Cup hockey semifinals, beating Malaysia 5-4 in a nerve-wracking Group A match at the Aspire Dome in Doha on Wednesday.
In another match, Kazakhstan, who were runners-up in the 2015 edition, had to really slug it out against Thailand before emerging 8-6 victorious.
Qatar will take on Kazakhstan in the second semifinal tomorrow at 7.30pm (local time) while defending champions Iran, who had no trouble in outsmarting Oman 10-3, meet Uzbekistan in the first semis at 6pm.
Chinese Taipei, who lost 2-7 to Uzbekistan, face Malaysia while Oman play Thailand for the 5th-8th play-off positions.
In the women’s event, North Korea lost 5-3 against Malaysia, but they were in top form in their 9-2 win over Uzbekistan.
China lost their fourth consecutive match, this time Thailand punished them with a 18-0 win.
