Manama (27 Dec, 2016): Naqi Strikers KSA defeated Don Bosco Kuwait 7-1 in the final of the Bahrain National Day Hockey 5s at St Christopher Senior School Astroturf recently.
Juned scored four goals and Ali nailed a hat-trick in Nagi Strikers’s triumph while Sneddon replied for Don Bosco Kuwait.
The event was organised by the Bahrain Hockey Association on Dec 16-17 and sponsored by UK Embassy and Aqua Cool. A coaching clinic and junior hockey 5s tournament was also held on Dec 17.
It was the first time an outdoor hockey 5s was held in the Gulf region in accordance with international rules and regulations of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
A total of 10 teams participated in the senior level of the 5s tournament that includes the Ministry of Interior Bahrain, Bahrain Hawks, Al Arab Hockey KSA, Kuwait Expats Hockey Association (KEHA), Oman Hockey Association’s Oman Veterans, Bahrain Hockey Developmental squad, KSA Field Hockey and Young Stars Hockey Club Bahrain.
Sam Ward, Team Great Britain and an England forward, who has 49 international caps and scored 18 goals, and also a member of the 2016 Rio Olympics squad, was a special guest for the Bahrain National Day 5s event.
The Briton conducted a coaching clinic for children on Dec 17 which also saw an overwhelming participation in the junior hockey 5s tournament. Panthers clinched the junior title by defeating Baboons in the final.
Salim Elias, President of Bahrain Hockey Association, thanked all the teams for the success of the Bahrain National Day Hockey 5s and congratulated the winners and runners up of the competition. He also presented a special memento to Mr Ward for his support for the event.
Bahrain Hockey Association General Secretary, Jude D’Souza, also presented a special memento to HE Mr Abdulrahman Askar, General Secretary of Bahrain Olympic Committee for his support of Bahrain Hockey and the National Day 5s Tournament.
