Germany has approved a new tax exemption on prize money awarded to athletes who win medals at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The measure, passed by both the Bundestag and Bundesrat, removes income tax on Sporthilfe medal bonuses, which in previous years could exceed 50 percent of the payout. Franziska van Almsick, vice-president of the German Sports Aid Foundation, described the decision as a strong sign of political support for elite athletes.
Alongside the exemption, medal bonuses are being increased: gold medalists will now receive €30,000, and silver medalists €20,000, while bronze remains at €10,000. Athletes finishing fourth to eighth will no longer receive performance bonuses, but will instead have access to alternative financial support programmes.
Meanwhile, Milano Cortina 2026 is advancing preparations for the Games through an extensive calendar of test events across the host region. These include Full Tests managed by the Organising Committee, Sport Tests run with partner organisations, and established international competitions supported by Milano Cortina 2026. The events aim to assess venues, logistics, and operational readiness, helping organisers refine plans and deliver a smooth experience for athletes, teams, and spectators ahead of 2026.
