The new members will be part of the organisation for the 2024-2028 period and will be responsible for representing Omani athletes and defending their rights.
The voting process took place at the Intercity Hotel in the city of Muscat and was attended by 17 assembly members, as well as several representatives of the Electoral Committee and the candidates seeking to be part of the next term, in which they will perform all kinds of functions in favour of a fairer national sports scene.
The event began with the welcome speech of the President of the Athletes Committee, Asaad Mubarak Al-Hasni, who highlighted that the structure of the entity was created based on the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and in line with the Basic Principles of Good Governance for the Olympic and Sports Movement. His words led to the celebration of the elections, the final result of which designated half a dozen members out of a total of nine candidates.
The elected individuals were Salih Nasser Al-Saadi (16 votes), Sultan Hamoud Al-Touqi (15), Buthaina Eid Al-Yaqubi (14), Mohammed Naseeb Al-Habsi (14), Wafa Saif Al-Samariya (14) and Khalifa Hamad Al-Jabri (12). Additionally, Fatma Talib Al-Nabhani and Salih Nasser Al-Saadi were appointed as athlete representatives for the IOC General Assembly, while Khalifa Hamad Al-Jabri will serve as a member of the IOC Board. They all have a work cycle ahead that will culminate in 2028.
“Today we are at the threshold of a new stage of work and development. I wish the new committee all the best in facing the upcoming challenges. We all recognise the pressing issues that require urgent attention, such as the protection of athletes’ rights and the guarantee of a safe sporting environment,” declared Al-Hasni.
The president made it clear in this regard that “The fight against doping is one of our main priorities. Protecting the health and safety of athletes is a shared responsibility, and we must work together to ensure that their sports careers are free from risks that could affect their lives and their future.”
According to Al-Hasni, the Athletes Committee has always worked on the development of an independent and comprehensive regulation approved by the Oman Olympic Committee, in addition to focusing on the activation of similar committees in various federations and bodies. The president expressed his hope that the new members will fulfil their functions, assume their responsibilities and meet the aspirations of national athletes.
