FIH President Tayyab Ikram: “Together, we have elevated hockey to the highest level in Paris 2024”

Back

At the end of the Paris 2024 Olympics, I find myself compelled to reflect on the extraordinary hockey tournament that captivated us all. It was an event filled with unforgettable moments, a showcase of the highest levels of skill and sportsmanship.

First of all, congratulations to both Dutch teams for this historic double and to all podium finishers: China Women’s team (silver), Argentina Women’s team (bronze), Germany Men’s team (silver), and India Men’s team (bronze).

But it’s a huge tribute to ALL athletes that I would like to give for having showcased their amazing talent in front of a crowded stadium, and on television, throughout the last 2 weeks. This was the best promotion for our sport! Whether you’re a medallist or not, you’ve all contributed to the great excitement generated by these outstanding Olympic Games.

I’d also like to renew our thanks to the more than 340’000 fans who’ve made their way, sometimes from very far, to the historic Yves-du-Manoir stadium. The atmosphere you’ve created has been nothing but superb! And of course, thanks to television, other media and digital platforms, the show has been joined by millions and millions of other fans. Sincerest thanks to you as well.

Our sincerest gratitude also goes to our hosts, including the International Olympic Committee, Paris 2024, the French and local authorities and the FIH team. Special thanks to IOC President Thomas Bach who, despite his very busy agenda, decided to stay with us for a full match!

We also used these Games to solidify our connections within the Olympic movement and the political world, welcoming many high-ranked personalities at our hockey venue. I personally had numerous interactions that were very extremely fruitful and insightful. This part is so important for the development of hockey.

Thanks to the unique window that the Olympics represent, many have discovered our sport for the first time. And I’m overwhelmed by the positive comments I’ve heard from these very people. I want to tell them: ‘very warm welcome to our hockey community! Whether you will play, watch or support, I wish you all to enjoy our sport and its values to the fullest … and to spread the word!’
