Pakistan took on the German junior hockey team, reigning world champions, in Lahore yesterday, to start a landmark U21 series, marking a significant moment in the revival of international hockey in the country. This is the first time in 21 years that a German hockey team has toured Pakistan, underscoring growing international engagement and the revival of top-tier hockey action in the nation.

The German contingent, comprising talented young players, played their first match in Lahore in the much-anticipated series yesterday, which will also see two more matches played in Lahore (8 & 11 March) and one in Islamabad (13 March). The multi-match contest aims to provide valuable international exposure to both teams as they prepare for the upcoming FIH Junior Hockey World Cup and signifies an important step in strengthening global hockey relations.

FIH President Tayyab Ikram expressed his enthusiasm about the return of high-profile international hockey action to Pakistan. “It is incredibly heartening to see international hockey being played once again in Pakistan. This series between Pakistan and Germany is not just about competition; it is about fostering goodwill, development, and the global growth of hockey. The FIH fully supports such initiatives that enhance the sport’s presence worldwide and provide young players with valuable experiences.”

The tour holds historical significance as Germany last played in Pakistan in 2004. The return of an elite European team signals a positive step toward restoring Pakistan’s status as a key destination for international hockey. Pakistan Hockey Federation officials and local fans have warmly welcomed the German delegation, with expectations that this tour will pave the way for further international hockey events in the country.

This tour not only boosts Pakistan’s efforts to reintegrate into the international hockey scene but also sets the stage for future collaborations and competitions on their home soil. The global hockey community will be closely following the action, hoping that such initiatives continue to inspire the next generation of players worldwide.
