Donghae, Korea: The much awaited, 5th Edition of the Champions Trophy starts today in the partly cloudy setting of Donghae City! Reigning Champions India will take on the Bronze Medalists of the 2016 Edition of the tournament, Japan, in the opening match of the day. Since the 2016 Women’s Asian Champions Trophy the two teams have clashed twice. Japan beat India by 2-0 in the World Hockey League in the 5th – 8th place classification match first, and then India defeated Japan in the Semi-final of Women’s Asia Cup later in 2017. India will look to start the tournament with a win and seek to retain their dominance in Asia for the second time running. In the second match of the day hosts Korea will take on a young Malaysian side ar the Sunrise Stadium. The two teams have played each other twice in which Korea emerged victorious.
South Korea leads the title tables, with two gold medals in three appearances, while Japan and India have one gold medal each. Japan is the only team to finish at a podium position in all four editions of the event, 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze.
