Iran retain title a record 7th time

28 April

Iran maintained their stranglehold on the men’s Indoor Asia Cup hockey for yet another year, defeating Kazakhstan 10-1 in the final at the Aspire Dome in Doha on Friday.

Iran along with Kazakhstan will compete at the next year’s World Cup in Germany while the Kazakh women, who defeated Malaysia 2-0, will also be seen at the premier event.

Qatar had to be content with a third-place finish, beating Uzbekistan 5-3 in the play-off.  The hosts thus improved their fourth-place finish earned two years back.

Malaysia beat Oman 5-2 to take the fifth slot while Thailand overcame Chinese Taipei 7-5 in the seventh-eighth play-off positions.

In the women’s competition, Thailand, North Korea, Uzbekistan and China came third, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
